I'm posting this here because we need to educate ourselves on what skills we need for our society. Depending on where we settle, we will need different skill sets. In this thread, I will break down what I think we may need for each area that was discussed previously as a potential settlement.
USA, Wyoming, Utah area: Easy but Expensive
Immigration rules will have to be considered for our international friends
Given that we would be in an area where access to building materials would be relatively easy compared to Siberia, our shelter could be more modernized. We would have access to the benefits of the US Postal service for having things shipped to us as needed. Also renting equipment and tools for site development is not difficult.
An example, while I don't advocate the lifestyle, is the Mormon Colorado City, Arizona... there are no hotels there for tourism, outsiders are shunned. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorado_City,_Arizona
We would need:
People with experience in infrastructure building mostly. Materials are easily obtainable, but finances are required, everyone else could contribute at a more relaxed pace.
Start with basic outdoors-man skills
Subsistence Farming
Cons: Living in degenerate country, financing a more modern establishment vs. rustic living.
*Of course we could go with more rustic living here too, but if someone falls ill- a doctor isn't going to be impossible to reach.
Altai Mountains, Siberia: Difficult, but Isolated
An example of Kazakh nomad life here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNEZV_1aDF8 (click on cc for English subtitles)
We would have to start from scratch here.
We would need:
People skilled with survival-ism first and foremost, for clean water and hunting.
Our first homes would be huts or tents till we could utilize the land more
We won't have nails, hammers, building materials unless we barter for them or bring them
Summer camps in the south during the winter
Fur and Leather utilization, tanning- animal cleaning after hunting- You can't be squeamish.
Medical knowledge, First Aid, knowledge of herbal medicine or how to obtain antibiotics/antifungals/etc in the country.
Russian language, bartering and customs knowledge of our neighboring nomads
Weapon making and maintenance- Eagle hunting is a means of survival in this area of the world
Social mediation skills for when there is disagreement- You can't just walk off into the unknown or quit.
Skilled hunters******Very important
Substance farming- winter and summer gardens
Good sanitation practices
Cons: very remote location, very dangerous, people who choose this must be physically fit and capable to handle themselves.
Greek uninhabited Islands: Possibly a moderate difficulty level. Also beautiful.
About Islands for sale: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U6JqdL1-Qk
We would be pretty rustic and off the grid here but importing items may not be so difficult.
We would need:
Agricultural knowledge for this climate
Rustic infrastructure building
Hunting, maybe? Depending on the island wildlife.
Medical/First aid/anti parasitic treatments would not be difficult to seek in emergency.
Greek Language
Fresh water development and discovery
Study Greek culture and survival in ancient times. There is a lot of information out there
Fishing
Boat and raft making
Good sanitation practices
Social mediation as well.
Cons: Financing the purchase of an island vs. settling quietly would need to be discussed.
For all these I recommend studying the immigration laws, language, customs, history, and whether or not something like what we are trying to do has been done before and utilize the phase system proposed be Sens so that we can grade our progress.
Please Discuss.
Also, this should not be a discussion on which place to settle, but which skills we need to learn, determined by the location.
